About Us
Woodlands and Hillbrow Care Home is truly a family concern.
When Gillian Lee first started to look after her Grandmother, she was unable to find alternative suitable residential accommodation for her, and so, established Woodlands in 1976. When that proved to be a success Gill, a trained Nurse, decided to take in more Residents. She had an extension built to her home and the rest, as they say, is history.
Hill Brow was purpose designed and built in 1986. Alison, her daughter, also trained as a Nurse and holds a degree in Nursing from City University / St Barts Hospital, London with a Diploma in Elderly Care. She left the NHS as Ward Manager of an elderly care unit at The Royal Free Hospital when she assumed control of both homes following her mother’s retirement in 1998.
For over 40 years, the family’s commitment has been to provide the very best care for the elderly, whatever their needs. This has been paramount and rewarded by achieving Excellent and Outstanding status in numerous CQC and Environmental Health inspections. Alison’s family are now involved in the daily activities. So, we may be looking forward to a third generation of the family to lead the way. Alison’s daughter Anna has been working in the homes for the last 5 years.

In August 2011, we proudly welcomed residents to Hill House, a luxurious, purpose-built 56-bedroom Nursing and Dementia home. At Hill House, we are dedicated to providing the highest level of care and the best facilities in a warm and comfortable home. Continuing our commitment to compassionate care, in 2018, we opened Farnham Mill, a 60-bed nursing home.
Our family ethos is to care for the residents as if they were our own family and it is important that our homes are happy places to live and work in.
Our Staff
We firmly believe a care home is only as good as the staff who work there.
A dedicated team of qualified staff look after the residents. Comprehensive training and development programmes are key to the outstanding standards of care the staff provide. We have been awarded Investors in People Gold status underlining Alison Lee’s commitment to providing excellent care, and providing good training and development for her staff.
Within our team, we are fortunate to have experienced trainers, teachers, and assessors available to support individuals at all stages of their training journey. When a new team member joins us, we strongly encourage them to enrol in the National Diploma training course, enabling them to become an integral part of our exceptionally skilled team.
Debbie Choulartan is our Manager at Woodlands. She joined the company in 2000. Debbie has a wealth of experience having worked as a senior carer, deputy manager and has completed her level 5 NVQ + diploma. In addition to this she is a qualified assessor, so takes an active role in staff development.
Bev Sines is the Manager at Hill Brow, she joined us in 2014 and has worked as a carer, senior carer and deputy manager before becoming the Manager.
In her first CQC inspection as a home manager Bev achieved an Outstanding Overall rating which only the top 3% of homes achieve.
The Deputy Managers at both Woodlands and Hill Brow are also NVQ assessors, as are all senior care staff. Many staff members have achieved NVQ4 and NVQ3. Development and leadership courses are often taken externally as are the more specialist subjects relating to elderly care.
We pride ourselves on always being fully staffed and never having to use agency staff.

Charities
In 2011 friends of Woodlands and Hill Brow set up a charity. This charity is called Families Supporting Care and aims to help elderly people in different ways. Where possible it will help support Residents whose funds diminish during their stay as well as supporting the local Alzheimers Café, the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice and other charities for the elderly.
Over the last 10 years the charity has helped support over 60 residents to stay in their chosen care home. The Trustees all have a close connection with the homes. It is the Trustees who decide how the funds are allocated.
The friends of Woodlands and Hill Brow are always looking for volunteers to help organise and support activities, such as a secretary and fundraisers.
Fundraising is an on-going commitment and funds raised from the different held in the home is supplemented by a regular donation from Alison Lee family.
